Popular Science | Toothpaste is not an artifact for "promoting teeth" and "filling teeth"

July 07, 2022

According to the latest news on the website of the State Food and Drug Administration, recently, some so-called toothpaste products on the market claim to have the properties of "promoting teething in young children", "repairing tooth cavities", "closing between teeth", "stabilizing loose teeth", and even " Regenerate teeth" etc. It should be pointed out that toothpaste is not a medicine, it cannot treat diseases, and it does not have the efficacy claimed above. Consumers are reminded to pay attention to the following points:

1、The main effects of toothpaste

Toothpaste is usually a semi-solid preparation that acts on the surface of human teeth by brushing to play an auxiliary cleaning role. A rubbing agent is the main raw material of toothpaste. When brushing teeth, the friction agent in toothpaste is rubbed on the tooth surface by the bristles of the toothbrush to clean and remove stains. With the innovation of toothpaste technology, adding corresponding efficacy ingredients to the ordinary toothpaste can make the toothpaste have corresponding efficacy, for example, adding fluoride can play a certain anti-caries efficacy. But it should be noted that any toothpaste can not treat oral diseases.

2、 Toothpaste can not "promote long teeth"

People only have two sets of teeth in their life - milk teeth and permanent teeth. Generally from about 6 months of age began to erupt milk teeth, 2.5 to 3 years of age all the milk teeth erupted; to about 6 years of age began to occur one after the physiological loss of milk teeth, permanent teeth replacement eruption, and then to about 12 years of age all the milk teeth are permanent teeth replacement, become permanent teeth. Regardless of the cause of the loss or damage of permanent teeth, they cannot be regenerated. There is no scientific evidence to show that brushing with toothpaste can affect the eruption of milk teeth, and it is impossible to regenerate permanent teeth after they are lost.

3、 Toothpaste can not "fill the cavity"

Caries are also known as tooth decay, which is one of the most common diseases in the oral cavity. At the early stage of tooth decay, the surface of tooth enamel starts to demineralize and the development process of tooth decay is irreversible. In other words, tooth decay (cavity) is not renewable after it occurs. Brushing teeth with fluoride toothpaste can strengthen the anti-carious ability of teeth, but it cannot reverse the process of caries development. Moreover, long-term gum disease leads to the destruction of gum tissue, which in turn leads to loose teeth and requires professional oral examination, diagnosis and treatment. The so-called "repairing cavity", "closing the gap" and "stabilizing loose teeth" by using toothpaste to brush teeth is not based on science.

Finally, we remind consumers that oral diseases such as dental caries should be mainly prevented, and it is recommended to maintain good oral hygiene habits and dietary habits, conduct oral examination regularly, choose toothpaste products rationally, and not believe the false claims that toothpaste can treat oral diseases.

According to data reports, commercially available dental water flosser help to effectively remove plaque from dental models with a removal rate of 99.8%.

The benefit of the dental water flosser is that it can effectively clean the surface of the teeth, gaps, gum gaps and sulci by using a high-speed pulsating water column. Because the surface of the teeth is not flat, using a toothbrush can only clean the surface of the teeth, but it is difficult to use a toothbrush to clean the gaps between the teeth, teeth and gums, and inside the sulcus, which is easy to occur caries. Using a flosser can remove the plaque and food residue in the mouth more thoroughly than a toothbrush, keep the mouth clean and hygienic, and effectively remove oral odor. In addition, the water flow generated by the flosser can massage the gums to a certain extent and promote the blood circulation of the gums."

The most direct feeling is: can more accurately through the gap between the teeth, the toothbrush is difficult to reach parts: especially the back of the alveolar, wisdom teeth, the edge of the gap, rinse clean.

* Warm Tip: A few people's gums bleed after using the flosser. This may be because these people's gums and gaps were initially inflamed. With inflamed gums, the soft tissues will not be as strong as healthy gums, so bleeding will occur in the short term, or the bleeding will worsen. The bleeding will improve in about 1 to 2 weeks when the inflammation has improved and subsided. In addition, if the bleeding and inflammation are severe, it is recommended to seek a medical diagnosis to eliminate the pathological cause.
