How much do you know about radiofrequency-based beauty devices?

Radiofrequency beauty devices

Radiofrequency (RF) is a high frequency alternating current electromagnetic wave between the sound wave and infrared spectrum. We refer to alternating current that varies less than 1000 times per second as low-frequency current, and alternating current that varies more than 10,000 times per second as high-frequency current. RF is such high-frequency current, with a frequency range of approximately 3KHz-300GHz.

RF is able to move charged particles at high speed through high frequency electromagnetic waves. In this process, the energy will penetrate deep into the dermis, while the temperature rises, the original collagen molecules will tighten and the fibroblasts responsible for producing collagen molecules will also produce new collagen molecules, and the effect of improving wrinkles and tightening the skin can be achieved.

The main categories are monopolar RF, bipolar RF and multipolar RF, which are differentiated by the number of electrodes.

Monopole RF

Monopolar RF has only one electrode, the other "electrode" can be a ground plate, and an electromagnetic field is generated between the electrode and the ground plate. If the device has a monopole, it can be thought of as one electrode acting on your skin and the other electrode connected to the ground wire.

Monopolar RF is the original generation of RF technology, allowing the energy to be dispersed and evenly distributed across the surface of the skin, heating up to a depth of 10-15mm below the skin, but monopolar RF has too much energy and very little depth control, so it is more suitable for deeper treatments and requires very professional operation, and is less suitable for home use.

Bipolar RF

Bipolar RF, as the name suggests, has two electrodes, one positive and one negative. The two electrodes are applied to the surface of the skin at the same time, and the energy starts from the positive electrode and reaches the negative electrode, forming a semi-loop-shaped circuit. In principle, for bipolar radiofrequency, the closer the electric field lines are to the surface of the skin as shown in the diagram above, the stronger the energy is. Similarly, the further away from the skin surface the electric field lines are, the weaker the energy is.

So it is not the more electrodes, or the deeper you reach, the better, but rather the effective energy distribution that determines the effect!

Compared to monopolar radio frequency, bipolar radio frequency is more precise and safer in terms of the area of action, and is not as efficient as monopolar radio frequency, but is more suitable for home use and more widely applicable.

Multipole RF

Multi-polar RF is strictly speaking a superimposed use of multiple bipolar RF, as long as a positive electrode and a negative electrode one by one, more electrodes are also called "multiple bipolar RF", so multi-polar RF can be seen as an enhanced version of bipolar RF.

There are now more and more radiofrequency beauty devices that use multi-polar radiofrequency, and we can give priority to this category when choosing. The common "Thermage" and "Fotona 4d" are applications of RF technology. The RF frequency of Thermage instruments in professional institutions is higher, with faster results and relatively stronger stimulation.
