Do you know what light therapy is?

November 24, 2022
Light is life itself
Precisely because light is life itself and is so beneficial to the human body, Hippocrates, the father of ancient Greek medicine, used sunlight as a means of disease prevention and toning a thousand years ago. As people's knowledge of light deepened, light therapy came into being. Light therapy is actually a method of preventing disease and promoting the body's recovery by using artificial or natural light sources, mainly ultraviolet therapy, visible light therapy, infrared therapy and laser therapy. The theory behind phototherapy is that biological tissues absorb light energy and convert it into heat and chemical energy, resulting in chemical reactions such as photolysis, photo-oxidation, photopolymerisation and photosensitisation in the body and producing biological effects. Different wavelengths of light produce different biological effects.

The role of light therapy
Red light therapy has a wide range of effects and is important for the skin and body; blue light therapy is typically used to treat neonatal jaundice and can help eliminate acne and blackheads; ultraviolet light therapy is effective for skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis, vitiligo, scleroderma and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma; infrared light therapy is mainly used for superficial skin disorders; in addition to single-colour light therapy, multi-colour light therapy is also used depending on the needs of the body.
Research in light therapy
Let's take a look at these examples and what experts have to say about whether light therapy is effective: more than 100 years ago, Fenson in Europe used special artificial light to treat skin diseases such as lupus and was called "the miracle doctor of light therapy". According to Len Saputo, M.D., "Light therapy is a future treatment that controls the basic aspects of the disease without the side effects." Harry Whelan, M.D.: "Using light therapy, recovery from severe burns, hard-to-treat injuries, muscle and tendon sprains, nerve and eye injuries, can be very rapid." John Harvey Kellogg, M.D., USA: "Light therapy is effective for treating diabetes, obesity, chronic fatigue, insomnia, baldness and other health problems."
